23 AUGUST 2005

Krupina, Slovakia (click logo above to visit Rosa Klub home)

ROSA 'Astra' - R. J. Geschwind, hybridizer

"Rudolf Jozef Geschwind (1829 - 1910) was the most prolific and well-known breeder of roses in the Austro-Hungarian empire; possibly throughout the whole of Europe of his time. Geschwind was a pioneer of rose species hybridisation long before the advent of scientific knowledge of DNA (ciick image of Rosa 'Astra' above for more information on this event in English - for text in Slovak, click this text link).

R. J. GESCHWIND (l829 - l910), was a forest manager in the town of Krupina which is situated near Zvolen, spent more than 5O years of his life in Slovakia. He was a pioneer of forest tree species hybridisation, however he became more famous as one of the outstanding rose cultivators in Europe. According to him he cultivated 7O7 rose species. He became well-known as a cultivatior of the frost-resistant park rose family so called northern or polar roses (Nordlandrosen) and "Hungarian (Slovak) climbing roses". He published many papers where his excellent knowledge of roses and their cultivation methods are shown. Roses cultivated by Geschwind are also used today for the re-crossing and reviving of the blood in many cultivated roses.
