Catch up with Luxury in Paradise while attending the
WFRS Regional Convention in New Zealand
by Norma Manuel
You look out of your 'Kingsgate Parnell' bedroom window on a clear fresh November morning, past beautiful shrubs to the most picturesque harbour one can imagine. The 'Quick Cat' is doing the regular trip to Waiheke Island and Devonport. To the , you spot Rangitoto, a volcanic island of 500 years and, through the trees, you spy the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Such beauty!
New Zealand, the little country from down-under, is probably the greatest paradise in the world. Come and view the beautiful scenery and admire the varied landscapes. With such climatic differences, one small country displays mild temperate climate with a good rainfall to keep vegetation fresh and green. Perfect for growing Roses! Come and judge our, 'Clean, green' image.
The Pre-Convention Two-Day Tour will take you into the famous Waikato countryside where the phenomenonal lush grass growth supports our dairy industry. Next, a visit to the Hamilton Rose Gardens to see the NZ Rose of the Year Awards and the Waikato Rose Show. The tour continues to Rotorua, the home city of our country’s native Maori people, and on to Thermal World Wonders, of which a guided walk will show you hot, bubbling mud pools. You need to be there to appreciate the distinctive sulphur smell! A Maori concert is included, so lap up culture while witnessing roses galore. Picturesque lakes and mountains are part of the countryside with plenty of native bush to be observed as you pass over the Kaimai Range. The following day, the tour returns to Auckland via the well-known Te Awamutu Rose Garden; with lunch, by the local Society as your hosts.
In Auckland, everything will be laid out for you with no stress. Consider this a true holiday while appreciating the flow of infomation from the world's most renowned rose experts. Dr. Tommy Cairns -WFRS President, Luis Desamero, Dr. Keith Zary and Tom Carruth (USA), Colin Horner (UK), Richard Walsh, Kelvin Trimper (AUSTRALIA), and Bob Matthews, Doug Grant, Rob Somerfield, David Benny (NEW ZEALAND).
What a line up of experts, and these great men are willing to share their rose secrets with you. Ever wondered why they scoop up all the prizes? Come and learn and give them competition!
Bring your spouse on this fantastic holiday too and who cares if they are not as fanatic about roses as you. Bus tours, shopping sprees, private garden visits, and a harbour cruise are organised for those not attending lectures. So much is offered for so little.
The week finishes with the New Zealand National Rose Show & Floral Design Exhibition, which will be just out of this world, in conjunction with the famous Parnell Rose Festival. Be sure to bring your cameras.
The Post-Convention Tour takes you further afield with a flight to Palmerston North to see more roses. Manawatu Rose Society members are your hosts while you are here; a trip is included to Bob Matthew's Nursery in Wanganui before attending the 2004 NZ International Rose Trial Ground Awards in the Dugald Rose Gardens in Palmerston North, followed by a visit to the Manawatu Society Rose Show and a private garden. You spend the night at Rydges Hotel before returning to Auckland the following morning or you could make arrangements to have a Tour to the South Island and view the beautiful scenery - big and rugged - as seen in the “Lord of the Rings” films. The friendly population is sparse, with open roads, mountainous terrain, fiords, and birdlife all part of the South Island uniqueness.
But this paradise is real, New Zealand is very affordable too.

City of Sails & Roses - 12-21 November, 2004
The World of Federation of Rose Societies Regional Convention programme starts with a morning stroll through the Parnell Rose Gardens opposite the Kingsgate Hotel with your hosts, the New Zealand National Rose Society Councillors and the Auckland Rose Society members. This will be followed with a light luncheon and a Free City coach tour.
The Pre-Convention tour leaves Auckland by coach on Saturday, the 13th, and travels to Hamilton to view the NZ Rose of the Year Awards in the Hamilton Rose Gardens along with a visit to the Waikato Rose Show before continuing on through beautiful countryside to Rotorua to visit the Murray Linton Rose Gardens. Grand Tiara Hotel is your hotel for the night. The following day, a visit will be made to the Thermal Village, Whakarewarewa, with geysers and boiling mud pools that Rotorua is known for, followed by a ride on the gondola to enjoy the views while you have morning tea before leaving for Te Awamutu to have lunch in a delightful garden. There will be more day coach tours on Saturday and Sunday to the Hamilton Rose Gardens to view the NZ Rose of the Year Awards and the Waikato Rose Show. These are same-day tours, returning to Auckland the same day for those not on the Pre-Convention Tour.
Also on Sunday there is an alterative choice: a morning Harbour Cruise (2hrs) on the Auckland Harbour and/or a tour to Auckland Western Suburbs for lunch, visiting a private garden and the garden of Bells Nurseries.
Monday morning is an optional tour to the Northland Rose Society, which is hosting a day visit to rose gardens with lunch in the Whangarei area where many champion roses are grown. Also the same day, a Floral Design Demonstration will take place, headed by three Demonstrators from the Waikato Floral Art of New Zealand (Inc.). This is an optional function.
For people who are not interested in the above functions, there is yet another alternative: a coach tour to the Auckland Domain Wintergardens, Eden Gardens, and to Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World. On Wednesday, again in the Waipuna Conference Centre, there are lectures by Dr Keith Zary speaking on ‘Roses of the 21st Century,’ and Bob Matthews on ‘Rose Virus’ followed by a Panel of Australasian speakers, Kelvin Trimper (Aust) Doug Grant, Rob Somerfield, and David Benny (NZ) discussing rose breeding. This will be followed by an invitation to a Rose Breeder’s Association Function.
Again, there is another alternative during the day Wednesday: a coach tour to the Auckland Eastern Suburbs, visiting private rose gardens (lunch included) at Waipuna Conference Centre.
On Thursday, a coach tour to Auckland North Shore has been organised by the North Harbour Rose Society to visit some of the most outstanding gardens in New Zealand (lunch included). Friday is the National Rose Show and Floral Design Exhibition in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell. This will be the biggest Show & Exhibition of flowers seen in the southern hemisphere for many years. All Auckland Floral Societies are taking part in the Floral Exhibition Judging of roses. The event begins at noon followed by the Opening at 3:30pm by the New Zealand Governor General.
The Convention Dinner, Prizegiving, and the WFRS Official Closing Ceremony will be held Friday evening. The Rose Show/Floral Exhibition will be open all weekend to the public.
On Saturday, a coach tour will take place to South Auckland as guests of the Franklin Rose Society. This tour will include a visit to the Manurewa Botanical Gardens as well as a trip into the beautiful countryside to visit private gardens (lunch included). In the evening, there is a Farewell meal.
The Post-Convention Tour leaves by air on Sunday morning for Palmerston North to attend the NZ International Rose Trial Ground Awards, in the well-known and famous Dugald MacKenzie Rose Gardens. Upon arrival at the airport, a coach will transport you to Matthew’s Nurseries in Wanganui to view many acres of roses and be the guests of Bob and Cath Matthews for lunch before attending the Rose Awards. The night will be spent at Rydges Palmerston North Hotel.
